COLUMBUS, Ga. | The Columbus State University Women's Soccer team found the equalizer in the closing minutes to earn a 1-1 draw against Georgia Southwestern State University Saturday evening at the Walden Soccer Complex in the Peach Belt Conference opener.
Columbus State moved to 3-2-1 overall and 0-0-1 in PBC play, while Georgia Southwestern moved to 1-1-3 overall and 0-0-1 in conference action.
Georgia Southwestern opened the scoring in the 16th minute when Maci Dunlap found the back of the net, giving the Hurricanes a 1-0 advantage.
The Cougars controlled much of the possession and generated several opportunities throughout the match, outshooting the Hurricanes 10-4 in the opening half. However, Georgia Southwestern goalkeeper Hannah Garrett made six first-half saves to preserve the one-goal advantage entering halftime.
Columbus State increased the pressure after the break, firing 14 shots in the second half while limiting Georgia Southwestern to just two.
The breakthrough finally came in the 87th minute. Mia Robinson found Ui Suzuki, who delivered the equalizer for her first goal of the season to pull the Cougars even at 1-1.
Columbus State nearly produced a dramatic game-winner in the final seconds. Gianna Musci launched a shot from near midfield as time expired, with the attempt finding the back of the net. After the officials came together to discuss the play, the goal was waved off as the shot was ruled to have traveled over the line slightly after time expired, bringing the match to a 1-1 draw.
The Cougars finished with a commanding 24-6 advantage in shots and placed 12 attempts on goal. Garrett recorded 11 saves for Georgia Southwestern, while Ashlyn Valentine made four saves for Columbus State.
