Columbus - Needing a victory to stay alive for a share of the Peach Belt Conference regular season championship, the Columbus State University women's soccer team scored a second half goal to break a 1-1 tie to defeat Montevallo 2-1 Wednesday. The PBC match took place at the Walden Soccer Complex.

If the Lady Cougars defeat UNC Pembroke on Saturday, CSU will clinch a share of the championship for the first time since 2010.

"Montevallo gave us all that we could handle tonight," said head coach Jay Entlich. "We didn't finish off scoring opportunities but I'm proud of the girls for responding after letting the first lead get away."

Columbus State (12-5-0, 8-2-0 PBC) started the match on an attack as Chelsea Person rifled a shot at the goal but goalkeeper Taylor Kerr made the save with her legs after just five minutes had went off the clock.

However, it wasn't long until CSU got on the board.  In the 11th minute, the Falcons were trying to defend off a Lady Cougar attack but a failed clearance attempt found Mandy Janowitz with the ball just outside of the box. The freshman fired the shot hitting the right upper 90 to give CSU the lead.

Kerr had to take on another hard shot in the 21st minute making a save on a Nicole Corcione attempt.

Montevallo's (2-8-4, 2-6-2) first real threat came 10 minutes later on a Pagie Scott attack. However, freshman Maylyn Parsons made her second save of the night.

The Falcons did break through in the 39th minute off a great pass by Emma Greenwood. Greenwood played the ball from midfield to a running Scott who dribbled in stride and beat Parsons to the left.

Coming out of the break, Columbus State continued to control the pace of play and tightened up on the defensive side of the ball limiting UM to just two shots over the final 45 minutes.

After nearly putting CSU ahead in the 50th minute, Corcione came through for the Lady Cougars eight minutes later scoring her team leading ninth goal of the year. In the box, the ball deflected off a UM player landing right at the freshman's feet. She turned and fired from about eight yards for the game-winner.

Over the final 30 minutes, the Lady Cougars were inches away from adding at least two goals. Shelby Rolling hit the post with a header while the rebound attempt found the crossbar during a CSU attack in the 68th minute.

In the 85th minute, Kelsey Pelletier fired a shot from the right side of the box that nipped the left post. The carom found Corcione who sent a shot high of the goal.

During the match, Columbus State held Montevallo to just five shots while taking 17. The Lady Cougars also had an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Maylyn Parsons recorded her second straight victory improving to 3-2-0 making two saves on three attempts. Taylor Kerr fell to 2-7-3 in the effort.

Columbus State will wrap up the 2013 regular season on Sunday taking on UNC Pembroke.  The match will begin at 1:00 p.m. at the Walden Soccer Complex.
