Josh FullerSt. Augustine, Fla. – After trailing for the first time in over 375 minutes of match action, the 17
th-ranked Columbus State University women's soccer team scored two unanswered goals to hand Flagler a 2-1 loss Tuesday. The Peach Belt Conference match took place at Saints Field in St. Augustine, Fla.
With the win, CSU has now won seven straight matches and hasn't dropped a decision since Sept. 13.
"This was a great victory for our team," stated head coach
Jay Entlich. "To allow a goal that quick in a match could be devastating to any team's morale, but the girls kept competing and we were able to score two great goals.
"Give credit to Flagler," added Entlich. "They are an improved team and they made us work for everything today."
Entering the game, Columbus State had kept a clean sheet for over 343 minutes, however, Flagler quickly put an end to it. Just 21 seconds into the match, the Saints found a way to sneak a goal past Lady Cougar goalkeeper
Maylyn Parsons.
Fio Fustango was able to play the ball into CSU territory and found Katie Reed near the box. Reed flicked the shot forward and it found the back of the net to give the Saints the early lead.
Flagler (6-2-1, 4-2-0 PBC) continued to put pressure on the Lady Cougar defense firing two more shots before the five-minute mark, including one that Parsons had to deflect away.
Each team continued to try to find a rhythm in the match over the next 15 minutes until the Lady Cougars found the equalizer.
In the 21
st minute, the Lady Cougars went on the attack, racing down the field.
Nicole Corcione, who was named the NSCAA National Player of the Week earlier in the day, found herself with the ball on the right end line before sending a pass to
Shelby Rolling, who was near the far end of the box.
Rolling corralled the pass and rocketed a perfect shot into the upper right 90 from 15 yards out. It was the senior's fourth goal of the season.
The attack kept coming from CSU as
Hugrun Elvarsdottir sent a dangerous shot into the Flagler box that had to be saved by Racheal Cecil.
Just minutes later, Cecil had to make another save, this time a header from Corcione in the 32
nd minute. However, the Saints defense wasn't able to clear the ball away from danger allowing Corcione to get the ball back.
Corcione dished it off to
Olivia Jarrell, who fired a rocket into the lower left corner of the net for what would prove to be the game-winning tally.
It was a quiet and defensive second half as the two teams combined to take just five shots in the period.
Flagler's last chance at a tie came in the 82
nd minute, but the attempt was blocked by the Lady Cougar defense to preserve the victory.
Columbus State is now slated for a road contest at Clayton State on Saturday. Kickoff from Morrow, Ga. is set for 7 p.m.
