Stephen WilliamsTAMPA, Fla. – Despite a heavy advantage in the shot column, the third-ranked Columbus State University women's soccer team fell 2-1 on the road at Tampa on Friday night. The match was played at Pepin Stadium in Tampa, Fla.
The match started on a sour note for the Lady Cougars (2-1-0), as Tampa struck first in just the fourth minute. Nastasia Asgedom put the Spartans on the board less than four minutes into the contest, with Gabby Scirica picking up the assist.
Playing from behind, the Lady Cougars began to test UT goalkeeper Caroline Frykgard.
Mandy Janowitz and
Chelsea Person each put shots on the net that required saves, while
Maylyn Parsons was keeping the margin at just one in the opposite net.
Sophomore
Atalia Ramirez subbed on in the 23
rd minute and helped kick the CSU offensive attack into high gear. Ramirez attempted a pair of shots with under 15 minutes to play in the first half, helping lead to a Lady Cougar corner kick.
Taylor Marks swung the ensuing corner into the box and senior
Shelby Rolling headed it into the net to tie the match at one.
Columbus State would attempt three more shots before the end of the half, but the two sides went to the break level at one.
In the second, it was the Lady Cougar offense that continued firing, getting four shots at the net in the first 11 minutes. The last of the four shots saw
Nicole Corcione bang one off the crossbar.
CSU added two more shots before Tampa (2-0-1) struck for what would prove to be the game winner. The duo of Asgedom and Scirica were at it again in the 71
st minute combining together to set up Cici Gonzalez for the go-ahead goal.
The Lady Cougars got off five more shots during the final 10 minutes of the match, but none found the net as CSU took its first regular season loss in nearly two years.
CSU outshot Tampa 19-8, including 11-3 over the final 45 minutes.
Maylyn Parsons allowed the pair of goals and made three saves over her 90 minutes in net.
