Stephen WilliamsMILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – Nearly five minutes into the first overtime, junior
Mandy Janowitz found the back of the net and lifted the 19
th-ranked Columbus State University women's soccer team over Georgia College 2-1 on Wednesday night. The Peach Belt Conference match was played at Bobcat Field in Milledgeville, Ga.
The overtime win is the second in the last three matches for Columbus State (6-2-1, 2-0-1) after defeating West Alabama in the first extra period last Tuesday.
Midway through the first overtime, the Lady Cougars started their final attack from the defensive third. A long pass played across midfield found the foot of
Chelsea Person, who flicked it past the backline connecting with Janowitz. The junior then beat the keeper one on one to give CSU the victory.
"This was a very difficult win for us and give Georgia College all the credit for that," stated head coach
Jay Entlich. "They made us work for everything tonight.
"We had a great goal in overtime and I was glad that we were able to finish that opportunity off for the win."
Georgia College (4-3-2, 2-2-0) struck first getting a goal from Unnbjorg Omarsdottir in the 17
th minute. The Bobcats continued to play well through the first half, outshooting the Lady Cougars 8-6 over the first 45 minutes.
However, it was all Columbus State after the halftime break.
Cassandra Wade fired the first of 15 Lady Cougar shots in the second half, forcing Ashlee Graham to make one of her 11 saves.
In the 59
th minute, a great individual effort from
Olivia Jarrell leveled the match at one. For the freshman, it was the fourth goal of the season.
The Lady Cougars then continued to create dangerous chances as they searched for the go-ahead goal.
With the match still tied at one and under a minute to play, Columbus State played the ball into the box setting up a chaotic few moments.
Shelby Rolling headed one at the net that Graham was able to keep out, but the rebound was left bouncing around the goal line. A GC defender was able to clear the ball off the line though, just before the Lady Cougars could tap it in.
The clearance didn't stop the CSU momentum, as the ball was served right back into the box. Jarrell, chasing her second goal of the match, headed the ball just outside the outstretched arms of Graham and the right post with under 15 seconds remaining sending the match into overtime.
The Lady Cougars took 17 shots versus just three for Georgia College over the second half and overtime.
Maylyn Parsons earned the win in net for CSU giving up just the one goal while making four saves.
Columbus State will be back at home on Saturday to take on Young Harris at the Walden Soccer Complex. The match will be CSU's annual Kicks for the Cure game with the Lady Cougars donning pink jerseys. The jerseys will be auctioned off with the proceeds going to benefit the American Cancer Society. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
