LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The third-ranked Columbus State University women's soccer team netted six first half goals on its way to a 7-0 season-opening victory over Union on Saturday. The game was played at Bellarmine University.
The Lady Cougars will now prepare for second-ranked Grand Valley State on Monday. Kickoff is scheduled for 10 a.m.
"This was a good way to get the season started," head coach
Jay Entlich said. "We were able to get some early goals and play a lot of people.
"We still have a long way to go and lots to improve on, but it was nice to get this one under our belt."
The top-scoring team in the country in 2016, the Lady Cougars picked up where they left off in Saturday's opener.
Drawing an early corner kick,
Tehgan Anguilm swung a ball into the center of the box finding an open
Olivia Jarrell, who tapped it home to give CSU the lead less than four minutes into the match.
Columbus State (1-0) struck again in the 16
th minute, as
Cassandra Wade cleaned up a loose rebound to double the lead.
Kelly Hendricks' shot deflected off the post leading to the goal.
Kimmy May's hustle set up CSU's third goal as the freshman deflected the ball away from the Union goalkeeper, leading to a wide open net for
Riley Clark's first of two goals in the match.
Parker Morgan and
Meghan Cottingham each netted the first goals of their collegiate career in the 35
th and 41
st minutes, respectively to spread the lead out to 5-0. Clark then capped off the first half with her second goal of the match just prior to the half.
On cruise control in the second, the lone Lady Cougars tally came after
Angelica Tabares drew a foul in the box leading to a penalty kick.
Tehgan Anguilm cashed in the opportunity to reach the final margin.
Adianna Ortiz made her first collegiate start in net and saved the only shot on goal she faced in the first 45 minutes.
Bria Riancho played the final 45 to secure the shutout.
