LOUISVILLE, Ky. – In a battle of top-ranked sides, the third-ranked Columbus State University women's soccer team downed second-ranked Grand Valley State 5-1 on Monday morning. The game was played at Bellarmine University.
The win over No. 2 GVSU is the highest-ranked opponent the Lady Cougars have defeated in program history.
Columbus State's four-goal margin was the largest defeat for Grand Valley State since the 1999 season and the five goals were the most allowed by the Lakers since 1998.
"I'm really proud of the way the girls responded after falling behind early," head coach
Jay Entlich said. "This was a great way to cap off the opening weekend.
"We will enjoy this for a little bit and then we have to go back to work for two tough opponents coming up this weekend."
Grand Valley State (0-2) deposited its first shot of the match into the left side of the net in the 13
th minute, but it would be all Lady Cougars the rest of the way.
After a foul near the sideline,
Tehgan Anguilm swung a free kick into the box, connecting with the head of
Riley Clark who found the net to even the score at one. The goal was the third in two games for the sophomore.
Less than one minute later,
Maddy Peterson dribbled to the end line and sent a ball toward the net that hit off the keeper's outstretched arm and fell into the net to make it a 2-1 contest.
The match held there until just before the half when the Lady Cougars found some insurance.
Amanda Murphy played a cross through the box that
Parker Morgan tapped home to send the match to halftime at 3-1.
Columbus State (2-0) found two more goals in the second half as
Olivia Jarrell deflected in a corner kick from Anguilm in the 53
rd minute and Murphy capped it off with her first collegiate goal in the 80
th minute off a pass from
Cassandra Wade.
Bria Riancho went the distance in goal for the Lady Cougars to earn her first career victory. The freshman stopped two of the three GVSU shots on target.
Columbus State will now return home for its first home matches of the season. The Lady Cougars will take on No. 16 Barry on Friday night. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Walden Soccer Complex.
