COLUMBUS – The third-ranked Columbus State University women's soccer team kept its unbeaten start to the season going with a 4-0 victory over Georgia College on Monday. The Peach Belt Conference match was played at the Walden Soccer Complex.
Columbus State (10-0-1, 7-0-0 PBC) put four more goals on the board, making it seven straight matches with at least three tallies. Georgia College (8-3-2, 2-2-2) had allowed just five goals in 12 matches this season before surrendering four on Monday night.
"Georgia College is a tough team to score on," head coach
Jay Entlich said. "We scored some really good goals tonight to break them down, and
Parker Morgan,
Madeline Goodfellow and
Bria Riancho did a great job in the back to keep the clean sheet."
The Lady Cougars controlled play right from the start on Monday, getting three shots off in the first four minutes of the match.
Olivia Jarrell had four of CSU's first six shots, but it was her fifth look at the net that started the scoring.
Kimmy May worked in from the left side before centering a ball to Jarrell, and the senior tucked it away to make it 1-0 in the 21
st minute.
Despite 11 shots in the first 45 minutes, the match was just 1-0 at the halftime break. However, that would change quickly after play resumed.
In the 49
th minute, Jarrell picked up a deflected pass outside the box and sent a rocket into upper right 90 for her second tally of the season. The goal was her 11
th of the season and 65
th of her career, moving her into third place on the Peach Belt's all-time list. Jarrell also moved to third place in career points with 154.
CSU was just getting started though, finding two more goals in a span of 90 seconds. Jarrell nearly netted a hat trick, but her attempt at a third goal hit the crossbar in the 56
th minute. The rebound dropped to
Brooke Nail in the center of the box, and the senior calmly punched home her fourth tally of the season.
In the 58
th minute,
Rachael Sweigard slipped a centering pass into the box aimed for
Riley Clark. The forward got on the end of the pass and tapped it past a sliding keeper leaving a wide open net for her seventh goal of the year.
The four goals were more than enough for the Lady Cougars, with the defense allowing just three shots on the night and Riancho recording her second straight shutout and fourth of the year.
Columbus State is at home again on Wednesday for a match against Georgia Southwestern. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Walden Soccer Complex.
