WINTER PARK, Fla. – For the second consecutive day, the Columbus State University baseball team tallied an extra-inning victory, winning 8-4 in 10 innings Saturday at Rollins. The three-game series is being played in Winter Park, Fla.
Â
With the game tied at four in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Cougars had their backs against the wall with runners on second and third and only one out.
Justin Evans moved from shortstop to the mound and induced a pair of groundballs. The Cougars came to the plate to nail the potential winning run on the first, and the second got CSU out of the jam and sent the game to extras.
Â
In the 10
th,
Austin Pharr got the rally started with a hit by pitch with one away.
Frank Wager then singled and
Gunar Drinnen then delivered the biggest hit of the day. The senior doubled to right field, bringing both runners to the plate and giving the Cougars the lead.
Â
Mason McClellan brought Drinnen home two batters later with a single and
Drew Webb added an RBI knock of his own to make it an 8-4 game.
Â
Evans then came out and took care of business in the bottom half of the inning to secure the victory for the Cougars and earn his first win of the season on the mound.
Â
"Just like yesterday, these guys don't quit," head coach
Greg Appleton said. "
Turner Vincent came up with a couple huge hits and Gunar really stepped up coming off the bench."
Â
Rollins (6-5) jumped on the board first with a run in the bottom of the first inning, but the Cougars answered right back.
Â
With two outs, the Cougars loaded the bases with an error, single and walk and Vincent unloaded them with a three-run double.
Â
The score held at 3-1 in CSU's favor until the sixth, when Rollins surged back in front behind a solo homer and a two-run shot.
Â
Again it was Vincent with the answer though, as the senior hit a two-out solo home run to tie the game in the seventh.
Â
Vincent was 2-for-4 on the day with four RBIs, while McClellan had a 3-for-5 showing.
Â
Perez Knowles started on the mound for the Cougars, giving up four runs in six innings of work.
Russell Forthofer,
Andrew Hayes and
Jarrod Little all worked out of the pen.
Â
Columbus State and Rollins will wrap up the series on Sunday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
