COLUMBUS – Squaring off with the defending national champions, the sixth-ranked Columbus State University men's tennis team fell 5-4 against 12
th-ranked West Florida on Sunday. The nonconference match was played at the John W. Walden Tennis Center.

Columbus State (12-3) has three narrow losses this season against teams ranked inside the top 15.

The Cougars got off to a great start with wins in two of the three doubles matches.

Zach Whaanga and
Alvaro Regalado picked up a ranked win 8-6 at the top doubles position, while
KP Pannu and
Matei Avram were 8-4 winners at second doubles.

Shao-Yu Yu and
Arnold Kokulewski dropped a close 8-6 match at third.

The Cougars only mustered two singles victories though, as West Florida rallied back to win the match.

Regalado won 6-3, 6-3 at third singles and Vargas was a 6-2, 6-3 straight-set winner at sixth.

Pannu was taken down 7-5, 6-4, while Whaanga lost 6-4, 6-3 at second singles. Kokulewski and Avram each dropped the first set 7-6 before being bested in the second set.

Columbus State will host USC Aiken and Francis Marion next weekend in Peach Belt Conference action. First serve against USC Aiken is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on Friday.
