COLUMBUS – In its fifth straight match against a ranked opponent, the third-ranked Columbus State University men's tennis team swept No. 21 Francis Marion 9-0 on Saturday. The Peach Belt Conference match was played at the John W. Walden Tennis Center.

Columbus State (14-3, 7-0 PBC) is now 6-3 against teams ranked inside the top 25.

The Cougars swept their way through doubles for an early 3-0 advantage.

Zach Whaanga and
Alvaro Regalado won 8-4 at the top spot, with
KP Pannu and
Matei Avram winning by the same score at second doubles.

It was a little tighter for
Jorge Vargas and
Shao-Yu Yu at third doubles, but the duo walked away with a 9-7 victory.

Singles play saw the Cougars win all six matches in straight sets.
Â
Pannu eased to a 6-1, 6-0 victory at first singles, while Whaanga took a 6-3, 6-3 match at second. Regalado cruised 6-2, 6-3 to win in the third position.

Paul Sprengelmeijer won a tight 7-5 opening set before blanking his opponent 6-0 to secure the victory at fourth singles. Avram tallied a 6-3, 6-2 win at fifth and Vargas finished it off with a 6-3, 6-1 win.

Columbus State's next match will be on Thursday at Shorter. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. in Rome, Ga.
