AUGUSTA, Ga. – In its first conference action of the season, the Columbus State University baseball team completed the three-game sweep of Augusta with a 5-1 win on Sunday.

Columbus State (14-2, 3-0 PBC) has now won eight straight games and swept each of its last two weekend series.

"We're very pleased to go on the road in conference and get a sweep," head coach Greg Appleton said. "T.J. (Clark) settled in and pitched well today and we got timely hits with runners in scoring position."

The Cougars needed just two batters to plate its first run on Sunday. Justin Evans opened the game with a single and swiped his seventh bag of the season. On the stolen base, Evans was able to move up to third on a throwing error from the Jaguars.

Garrett Kirkwood then cashed in Evans with a sacrifice fly to give the Cougars the early advantage.

Augusta (6-13, 4-8) answered back with a run of its own in the second inning, but CSU starter T.J. Clark would be sharp from there. Clark would throw up five consecutive scoreless frames after allowing the one run, getting a little help from his offense in the fourth.

With Mason McClellan on second, Robert Brooks singled into centerfield and the throw to the cutoff man got away, allowing Brooks to move to second and McClellan to score. Will Hodges then delivered a two-out RBI single that brought Brooks to the plate to make it a 3-1 contest.

Columbus State tacked on single runs in the seventh and ninth innings, both courtesy of McClellan. The senior scored Drew Webb with a single in the seventh and brought home Kirkwood with a double in the ninth.

Clark turned the ball over to Sheridan Coy in the eighth and Coy retired six of the seven batters he faced in two scoreless innings for his second save of the season. Clark moved to 3-2 on the season behind seven strong innings. The right-hander allowed five hits and fanned five.

Brooks, Evans, Hodges and McClellan had two hits apiece to lead the Cougars.

Columbus State will return home to take on Auburn Montgomery on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Burger King Stadium.
