Cougars Dominant in PBC Title Match

FLORENCE, S.C. – In a match featuring two teams ranked in the top five in the country, the third-ranked and top-seeded Columbus State University men's tennis team rolled to a Peach Belt Conference Tournament championship with a 5-0 victory over fourth-ranked and second-seeded Lander on Sunday. The tournament was hosted by Francis Marion.
 
Columbus State (22-3) captured its third PBC Tournament title and second straight. The Cougars improved to 11-3 against ranked opponents this season.
 
CSU came out on fire on Sunday, racing to a 3-0 start in doubles action. Zach Whaanga and Alvaro Regalado started the day with an 8-3 win in a battle of top-20 doubles teams.
 
Jorge Vargas and Arnold Kokulewski picked up an 8-4 victory at third doubles, and KP Pannu and Matei Avram made it a doubles sweep with an 8-1 win at second.
 
In the race to get two singles victories, it was the doubles pair of Pannu and Avram that were able to notch the clinching points for the Cougars. Avram was victorious 6-2, 6-1 at fifth singles, and Pannu then clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-2 win at the top spot.
 
Lander (20-3) suffered just its third loss of the season, two of which have come to the Cougars by a combined score of 12-2.
 
Columbus State gets the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Southeast Regional, which will be played April 30 and May 1. The NCAA Tournament field will be revealed during the selection show on Tuesday evening.
