ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The 10
th-ranked Columbus State University baseball team tallied a split in two games at the Peach Belt Conference Tournament on Saturday. The games were played at Flagler.
Â
Columbus State (40-12) fell 4-1 in the opening game against USC Aiken, but bounced back for a 7-2 victory over Young Harris in the nightcap. The Cougars finished pool play at 2-1, even with USC Aiken for the top spot in the pool, but the Pacers hold the head-to-head tiebreaker and will advance to Sunday's PBC Championship.
Â
CSU will now await their NCAA Tournament fate. The Cougars were fourth in this week's Southeast Region poll, with seven teams advancing to the Southeast Regional beginning on Thursday. The NCAA field will be revealed on Sunday night at 10 p.m. on NCAA.com.
Â
"Obviously, we wanted to come down here and win the tournament," head coach
Greg Appleton said. "We're disappointed to be out early, but we did some good things this weekend and now we hope to see our season continue and have games to prepare for next week."
Â
Game One
Â
The Cougars struggled to get the bats going in game one, despite plating the day's first run.
Robert Brooks singled home
Mason McClellan in the top of the first to give the Cougars the lead, but it was the only run CSU would score in the opener.
Â
USC Aiken took the lead with a pair of runs in the second before tacking on another in the third and sixth innings.
Â
Columbus State had six hits in the game, but left nine on the basepaths.
Â
Perez Knowles (6-3) gave up the four runs on eight hits and suffered the loss.
Sheridan Coy worked two scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
Â
Game Two
Â
The bats were slow again in game two, but the Cougars took advantage of shaky pitching in the third inning. CSU took five consecutive free passes with two on in the third, four walks and a hit by pitch, to force the first four runs of the game across the plate.
Â
The Cougars scored the more conventional way in the fourth, as
Drew Webb launched his sixth home run of the season to stretch the lead to six.
Austin Pharr doubled off the base of the wall later in the inning, bring
Grant Berry to the plate to add another run.
Â
Tyler Cadenhead (8-0) had more than enough offensive support on the mound. The sophomore went the distance for the first complete game of his career. Cadenhead surrendered just one earned run on the night, scattering eight hits and recording five strikeouts.
