COLUMBUS – The 12th-ranked Columbus State University women's soccer team opened with a bang on Friday night, downing Embry-Riddle 3-0. The match was part of the CSU Collegiate Invitational at the Walden Soccer Complex.

It was a record-setting night for senior Olivia Jarrell, who broke the program's all-time goals and points records in the win. Jarrell's pair of goals give her 56 for her career, passing Stephanie Parrish for the top spot. Her assist later in the match moved her into first place on the points leaderboard with 131, also jumping Parrish and Nicole Corcione.

"This was a good way to start the season," head coach Jay Entlich said. "I thought we played well, but obviously have a lot of areas that we need to clean up.

"I'm happy for Olivia. She's meant so much to this program throughout her career and is a tremendous player."

In a rain soaked first 20 minutes, the two sides played to a stalemate, with Embry-Riddle taking the match's only two shots.

Columbus State finally broke through on its first shot of the night in the 24th minute. A ball that bounced around the box found the foot of Jarrell at the top of the 18, and the senior tucked the shot inside the left post.

The Eagles nearly equalized in the 38th minute, but a shot was deflected by Bria Riancho and bounced off the post to stay out of the net.

The match went to halftime at 1-0 with four shots apiece, but the second half belonged to the Lady Cougars.

In the 55th minute, CSU worked the ball down the left flank with the ball ending up with Maddy Peterson in the attacking third. The sophomore played a perfect ball across the face of the goal and Jarrell flew in from the right side to double the lead and set the program scoring record.

Less than seven minutes later, Jarrell played a ball down the middle of the field that Kimmy May took the distance and beat the keeper inside the right post for the finishing touches.

The Lady Cougars outshout Embry-Riddle 15-9 on the night, with Riancho tallying her first shutout of the year.

Columbus State is back in action on Sunday with a showdown against second-ranked Carson-Newman. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Walden Soccer Complex.
