COLUMBUS – The 12
th-ranked Columbus State University women's soccer team made it a perfect opening weekend with a 3-2 victory over No. 2 Carson-Newman on Sunday. The match was part of the CSU Collegiate Invitational at the Walden Soccer Complex.

Columbus State (2-0-0) jumped in front with two early goals and withstood a late Carson-Newman rally for its second win of the weekend.

"This was a great win," head coach
Jay Entlich said. "We believe in what we're doing. We want to keep the ball, possess and break teams down and I thought we were really good at times today.
Â
"We got a little tired and lost our focus at the end and made some mistakes that led to a couple goals, but we have to be happy with a win over a great opponent."

The Lady Cougars got rolling less than six minutes into the match, as
Olivia Jarrell drove into the box from the right side and was taken down for a penalty kick.
Tehgan Anguilm converted on the ensuing attempt and CSU was off and running.

Columbus State struck again in the 12
th minute. Anguilm slotted a pass from the left side to Clark in the center of the box, and the forward snuck in her first tally of the season to double the advantage.

The match remained 2-0 for the rest of the first half, with the Lady Cougars holding a 12-5 edge in shots after 45 minutes.

CSU roared out of the gates after halftime as well, scoring in the opening minute. Clark set up the goal this time, finding
Rachael Sweigard open in the box and the freshman tucked away her first collegiate goal.

Carson-Newman (0-2-0) had chances to get on the board throughout the second half, but was unable to until the final six minutes.

The Eagles struck for goals in the 85
th and 87
th minutes to pull within one, however the Lady Cougars held off the final push to secure the victory.

Columbus State will be on the road for the next three matches, starting Friday night at No. 23 Nova Southeastern. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
