Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Lady Cougars Suffer 2-1 Loss to No. 6 Flagler

It was Flagler's first-ever victory over Columbus State.

COLUMBUS - Sixth-ranked Flagler scored a goal in the 68th minute to break a 1-1 tie lifting the Saints to a 2-1 victory over the Columbus State University women's soccer team Wednesday afternoon. The Peach Belt Conference match took place at the Walden Soccer Complex.

After Columbus State (4-5, 0-3 PBC) found a first-half equalizer, the Lady Cougars looked to be the more aggressive team in the second period. In the 57th minute, Amanda Murphy nearly put CSU in front as she rocketed a shot of the left woodwork denying the Lady Cougars the goal.

The best chance for the go-ahead goal came in the 59th minute as Riley Clark drew a foul in the box to set up a penalty kick. However, Columbus State didn't capitalize on the chance keeping the match tied.

It wouldn't be long until Flagler (7-0, 2-0) jumped back in front. Off a corner kick in the 68th minute, Josefine Nilsen found the ball with her forehead among the crowded box for the game-winner.

CSU had a few more looks at the net, but no shots were successful.

Flagler went ahead early in the match as Sara Sandberg took the ball into the right side of the box and fired a shot. Columbus State goalkeeper Sara Halilhodzic was able to save the first attempt, but the rebound went right back to Sandberg allowing an easy open net opportunity for the goal in the seventh minute.

Columbus State responded, however. In the 20th minute, Riley Clark was able to curl her fifth goal of the season into the goal deadlocking the match at one.

"We have to go back to the drawing board and continue to keep getting better as a team," said head coach Jay Entlich. "These are not the results that we are looking for and we have to be better than this."

The Lady Cougars and Saints each had 15 shots in the match, with CSU holding a 7-3 advantage in the second half. The Lady Cougars also had 12 corner kicks compared to Flagler's three.

In her first action of the season, Halilhodzic made six saves as she played the entire match in net for Columbus State.

Columbus State will return to the pitch on Saturday taking on Lander in Greenwood, S.C. The match is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. at Van Taylor Stadium.
