GREENWOOD, S.C. - The Columbus State University women's soccer team fell 3-2 in overtime to Lander Saturday evening. The Peach Belt Conference match took place at Van Taylor Stadium in Greenwood, S.C.
In the 94
th minute, Kelcie Fisher lofted a shot from 25-yards out to score the golden goal for the Bearcats.
It was a back-and-forth match all day long with Columbus State going in front early. Just 16 minutes in,
Kimmy May found a loose ball in the box and hammered it home into the right side of the net for her fifth goal of the season.
However, Lander (4-3-1, 2-0-1 PBC) was up for the challenge. The Bearcats evened things up a few minutes later with Emily Jermstad breaking through the CSU defense for the goal. After the break, Lander went in front on a 59
th minute score.
Needing a clutch moment, senior
Riley Clark stepped up for Columbus State (4-6, 0-4). In the 75
th minute, Clark found a hole in the box and was able to slide in her sixth goal of the year.
CSU nearly went in front less than five minutes later. May sent a shot from outside the box forcing LU goalkeeper Sarah Owen to push it off the crossbar. The Lady Cougars couldn't get a shot off the carom.
Columbus State didn't post a shot in the overtime period before the game-winning goal.
In the match, Columbus State outshot Lander 14-7 with each side having six on goal. It was a physical affair with each team receiving two yellow cards.
Columbus State will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 9 hosting Young Harris for the annual Kicks for the Cure Match. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Walden Soccer Complex.
