Women's Soccer Drops OT Decision to Lander

CSU will return home on Wednesday, Oct. 9 to host Young Harris.

GREENWOOD, S.C. - The Columbus State University women's soccer team fell 3-2 in overtime to Lander Saturday evening. The Peach Belt Conference match took place at Van Taylor Stadium in Greenwood, S.C.

In the 94th minute, Kelcie Fisher lofted a shot from 25-yards out to score the golden goal for the Bearcats.

It was a back-and-forth match all day long with Columbus State going in front early. Just 16 minutes in, Kimmy May found a loose ball in the box and hammered it home into the right side of the net for her fifth goal of the season.

However, Lander (4-3-1, 2-0-1 PBC) was up for the challenge. The Bearcats evened things up a few minutes later with Emily Jermstad breaking through the CSU defense for the goal. After the break, Lander went in front on a 59th minute score.

Needing a clutch moment, senior Riley Clark stepped up for Columbus State (4-6, 0-4). In the 75th minute, Clark found a hole in the box and was able to slide in her sixth goal of the year.

CSU nearly went in front less than five minutes later. May sent a shot from outside the box forcing LU goalkeeper Sarah Owen to push it off the crossbar. The Lady Cougars couldn't get a shot off the carom.

Columbus State didn't post a shot in the overtime period before the game-winning goal.

In the match, Columbus State outshot Lander 14-7 with each side having six on goal. It was a physical affair with each team receiving two yellow cards.

Columbus State will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 9 hosting Young Harris for the annual Kicks for the Cure Match. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Walden Soccer Complex.
