COLUMBUS - The top-ranked Columbus State University men's tennis team came away with a 6-1 victory over eighth-ranked Valdosta State Sunday. The match took place at the John W. Walden Tennis Center.

CSU has been unstoppable in doubles to open the season and the trend continued Sunday. Top-ranked Alvaro Regalado and Zach Whaanga took down Florian Simbozel and Yohan Nguyen at the number one spot 6-1. The 15th-ranked duo of KP Pannu and Matei Avram won their doubles match 6-2 while Fabien Asdrubal and Arnold Kokulewski teamed up to get a 6-3 win as the Cougars earned the doubles point.

Singles play saw a top-three showdown at the number one spot. Top-ranked Pannu squared off in a tough matchup against third-ranked Jordi Mas. Pannu took the first set 6-4 before Mas returned the favor winning by winning 6-1 to force a third set. It was Pannu who then raced his way through the third set shutting Mas out 6-0 to take the match.

In the third spot, it was 25th-ranked Whaanga who defeated one of his doubles opponents Simbozel in a tightly contested match, winning 7-5, 6-4. Tommaso Schold won 6-1, 6-2 in the fifth spot while Avram got the job done in straight sets winning each set by a 6-2 score.

With the match already in hand, both Regalado and Kokulewski went to a ten-point tiebreak after splitting their first two sets. Regalado came out on top winning 10-5 while Kokulewski fell 10-6 in the third set tiebreak for CSU's lone loss.

Columbus State will turn around and play on Tuesday, Feb. 12 taking on Morehouse College at the John W. Walden Tennis Center.
