ORLANDO, Fla. - In a rematch of the 2018 NCAA National Championship, the top-ranked Columbus State University men's tennis team lost 7-0 to third-ranked Barry Saturday. The nonconference match took place at the USTA Training Center in Orlando, Fla.Â
Barry swept doubles play to earn the point. First doubles was a tightly contested match with Pierre Montrieul and Blake Bayldon knocking off top-ranked Zach Whaanga and Alvaro Regalado 6-4. At second doubles, 15th-ranked KP Pannu and Matei Avram fell 6-3 to Alejandro Gallego and Alejandro Palacios. Carlos Gomez and Vivien Versier took third doubles over Tommaso Schold and Arnold Kokulewski 6-2.
The match of the day was at first singles as top-ranked Pannu and second-ranked Montrieul battled in a three-set classic. The match ultimately went the distance with each player taking one of the first two sets. In the decisive set, Montrieul needed a tiebreaker to win the match 6-4, 4-6, 7-6. Sixth singles also went to three sets with 29th-ranked Daniel Ventura winning 5-7, 6-3, 10-6 over Schold.
The Buccaneers won the remaining four matches in straight sets. At second singles, 27th-ranked Whaanga batted sixth-ranked Gomez before eventually falling 6-4, 7-5. Gallego took third singles over 25th-ranked Regalado 6-0, 6-3 while Kokulewski suffered a 6-3, 7-5 loss to Palacios at fourth singles. In the other remaining match, 44th-ranked Versier captured fifth singles winning 7-6, 6-0 again Avram.
The Cougars will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 20 hosting Georgia Southwestern. The match will begin at 2 p.m. at the John W. Walden Tennis Center.
