COLUMBUS – The second-ranked Columbus State University men's tennis team knocked off Montevallo 6-1 Saturday afternoon. The nonconference match took place at the John W. Walden Tennis Center in Columbus.
CSU took two of the three doubles matches to take the early advantage. At the top spot, the number one doubles team in the land,
Zach Whaanga and
Alvaro Regalado, breezed to a 6-2 victory. The other Cougar victory came at the second spot with 15
th-ranked
KP Pannu and
Matei Avram winning 6-1. The Falcons did take third doubles as Georg Trompler and Tanguy David defeated the CSU pair of
Arnold Kokulewski and
Tommaso Schold 6-2. With the two doubles wins Columbus State took the doubles point.Â
In singles the Cougars took five of the six matches as top-ranked Pannu got the Cougars rolling in the first position with a 6-1, 6-3 win. Kokulewski played in the third spot and defeated one of his doubles opponents Tanguy David by a score of 6-1, 6-2.Â
25th-ranked Regalado cruised to a dominating 6-1, 6-0 victory in the fourth spot. Schold and Avram both won in straight sets with Schold winning in the fifth position 6-1, 6-2 and Avram winning his match 6-3, 7-5. The Cougars won five of their six singles matches in straight sets. The lone loss for the Cougars came from Whaanga who fell 4-6, 6-4 before losing 4-10 in the tiebreaker.Â
Columbus State will head to Livingston, Ala. to take on West Alabama on Sunday, Feb. 24. The match will begin at 2 p.m.
