COLUMBUS – The Columbus State University men's basketball team couldn't slow down Georgia College in the second half as the Cougars fell 76-70 to the Bobcats Wednesday night. The Peach Belt Conference game took place inside the Lumpkin Center.
Georgia College shot 56.5 percent (13-for-23) from beyond the arc in the game, including an 8-for-12 performance over the second half.
Â
"This was a hard one for us to drop," commented head coach
Robert Moore. "I thought we played well in spurts, but we couldn't close out on the perimeter and that definitely hurt us. But we'll regroup in practice and be ready for Young Harris for this weekend."
Â
The two sides exchanged blows early in the game as neither raced out to a large lead. Midway through the first half, Columbus State trailed 22-21, but a 9-0 run gave the Cougars a 30-22 lead with just over five minutes to play in the half.
DeMarcus McVay started the run with two jumpers while
Bryant Givens capped it off with a three.
Georgia College didn't waste time tightening the margin knocking down back-to-back shots from downtown to make it 32-30. CSU was able to hold off the Bobcats at the break taking a 40-37 lead into halftime.
Â
The Bobcats came out firing in the second half and quickly found themselves back in front. GC began the half on an 8-2 run to go in front 47-42. After a
Landrius Horton three, Georgia College hit three straight trifectas to take a 56-47 lead with 13:09 to go in the game.
Columbus State would remain in the game and made one late push for the victory. Down 66-59, three-point plays from
Jalen Thomas and Givens made it just a one-point game with 4:02 left on the clock.
Â
Georgia College went back up by four, but another Thomas layup and the foul made it a 69-68 game a few seconds later. But the Cougars couldn't come away with a big stop as the Bobcats hit another three and stifled CSU's offensive attack holding on for the victory.
Â
Five CSU players scored in double figures led by L. Horton's 16 points. Thomas had 11 points and six assists while Givens had 10 points and five assists.
As a team, Columbus State shot 44.4 percent (28-for-63) and 33.3 percent (7-for-21) from three.
Â
The Cougars will hit the road for a game against Young Harris on Saturday, Feb. 23. Tipoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
