COLUMBUS - The top-ranked Columbus State University men's tennis team swept its way past seventh-ranked Saint Leo 7-0 Friday. The match took place at the Walden Tennis Complex.
The Cougars opened the match up strong in doubles being led at the top spot by top-ranked
Zach Whaanga and
Alvaro Regalado who came away with a 6-3 win over Bruno Faletto and Aurel Ciocanu. In second doubles, No. 15
KP Pannu and
Matei Avram dominated the courts with a 6-2 victory. The Cougars made it a perfect three for three to earn the point in doubles with
Fabien Asdrubal and
Arnold Kokulewski winning 6-3.
In singles action, it was straight set victories for all six Cougars. Top-ranked Pannu took down Faletto 7-6, 6-1 while 27th-ranked Whaanga won in the second position 6-3, 6-4. Twenty-fifth ranked Regalado squared off against one of his doubles opponents, Ciocanu, winning 6-3, 6-4 while Asdrubal recorded a 6-2, 6-4 win.
Tommaso Schold played in the fifth position winning 6-4, 7-6 while Avram rounded things out for the Cougars with a 7-5, 6-3 victory.
The Cougars have now started their spring season with back-to-back 7-0 shutouts.
Columbus State will be back in action on Sunday, Feb. 10 taking on Valdosta State at the John W. Walden Tennis Center.
