GREENWOOD, S.C. - The Columbus State University baseball team dropped the second game of the series against Lander 4-0 on Saturday. The Peach Belt Conference game took place at Dolny Stadium.

Davis Cunningham (3-3) had his best performance of the season for the Bearcats, as the Cougars were only able to muster three hits the entire game. The right handed sophomore struck out eight CSU batters without giving up a run through six innings of action.

"We really struggled today to figure out their pitching," said head coach Greg Appleton. "Credit to them on the mound but we've got to be better in the batter's box at working the count."

Columbus State (15-7, 5-3 PBC) fell behind early once again as they ran into trouble in the bottom of the second inning. The Bearcats led off with back-to-back base knocks to put runners on second and third with no outs. With one swing of the bat Roury Glanton hit his sixth home run of the season, putting the Cougars in a 3-0 hole.

CSU would give themselves an opportunity in the fourth inning when Frank Wager was hit by a pitch to leadoff the inning. After two strikeouts it was Grant Berry who hit a two-out single to put two on the base paths for the Cougars. But a groundout would quickly end the opportunity. The single by Berry also ended up being the final hit of the game for Columbus State as they were shut down the rest of the way.

Trailing by four, the Cougars would get one final chance late in the game. Jalen Latta (2-2) retired nine of the final 11 batters he faced as he put up zeroes on the scoreboard in three straight innings. Heading to the eighth, the Cougars then picked up two walks to put two on with two down. But a fly out to center would strand the runners one final time.

Kendall Ford, Chase Brown and Berry all finished 1-for-4 for CSU picking up the only three Cougar hits of the game.

Latta finished his outing on the mound going seven innings giving up four runs while striking out six.

Columbus State and Lander will play the final game of the series Sunday, March 17. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Dolny Stadium.
