CHARLOTTE - The second-ranked Columbus State University men's tennis team hit the road and came away with a 6-1 win over No. 21 Queens late Friday night. The match took place at the Charlotte Indoor Tennis Club.
CSU grabbed the opening doubles win at the top position with top-ranked
Zach Whaanga and
Alvaro Regalado coming away with the 6-2 win. But then Columbus State ran into trouble in second and third doubles.
Tommaso Schold and
Arnold Kokulewski fell in a tightly contested match 4-6 leaving the doubles point up to 15th-rankedÂ
KP Pannu and
Matei Avram. Pannu and Avram fell just short at the end, losing 5-7 to give Queens the doubles point heading into singles play.Â
The Cougars quickly turned the heat up in singles play. Top-ranked Pannu finished first in the top position taking his opponent down in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. Regalado and Whaanga followed Pannu both winning in straight sets with 27th-ranked Whaanga winning 6-2, 7-5 and 25th-ranked Regalado defeating his opponent 6-3, 6-3.Â
In the fourth spot it was Kokulewski grabbing another point for the Cougars winning 6-2, 6-3 while Avram grabbed another straight set victory 6-4, 6-2.Â
The only singles to go to three sets was in the fifth position with Schold grabbing the singles sweep for the Cougars. Schold split the first two sets 7-5, 1-6 before winning the tiebreaker 10-4.Â
The Cougars will remain in North Carolina to take on Wingate Saturday, March 2. The match will begin at 1:30 p.m.
