ST AUGUSTINE, Fla. - The Columbus State University baseball team fell for the second game in a row against Flagler, losing 4-3 on Saturday afternoon. The Peach Belt Conference game took place at Drysdale Field.Â
The Cougars jumped out to the early 2-0 lead but couldn't hang on as Flagler dropped a three-spot in the bottom of the fifth to propel them to the win.Â
"We always talk about crooked numbers and how it changes a game and it certainly did tonight for Flagler," said head coach Greg Appleton. "We let them put up three in that one big inning and it proved to be the difference down the stretch. But we'll regroup and fight hard tomorrow to try to pick up a win to close out the series."Â
In the first inning CSU took advantage of a misplay by Flagler allowing Kendall Ford to advance to second base on the error to open the game. After getting moved over to third on a sac-bunt Ford would cross home plate on a wild pitch to start the scoring.Â
The Cougars would grab another run in the bottom of the third inning when Frank Wager ripped a double into right center to score Robert Brooks making it 2-0.Â
Sam Sowerbrower pitched three shutout innings to open while striking out four to keep the Flagler bats quiet. They would cut into the lead though in the bottom of the fourth after back-to-back hits made it a 2-1 game.Â
But Sowerbrower (2-1) would dig deep with runners on first and third and only one out. The senior would record back-to-back strikeouts to get out of the jam keeping the Cougars in front.Â
CSU would get that run back though in the top of the fifth after Ford scored on a sacrifice fly from Garrett Kirkwood.
But in the bottom of the frame Flagler would explode to give themselves their first lead of the game. Three runs off of three hits would put the Saints in front 4-3, a scoreline that remained that way for the rest of the game.Â
The Cougars had another opportunity in the seventh to try to tie the game when two singles put runners on first and second with only one out. But back-to-back strikeouts would end the threat stranding the runners on the base paths.Â
CSU would get just one more hit while striking out five times in the final two innings to drop them to two losses in a row for only the second time all season.Â
Bryce Delevie and Ford were the only two Cougars with multiple hits. Delevie went 2-for-3 while Ford finished 2-for-5 with two runs scored.Â
Columbus State and Flagler will close out the series on Sunday, March 31. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
