Cougars Finish Conference Play Undefeated

COLUMBUS - The second-ranked Columbus State University men's tennis team rolled their way to a 7-0 sweep over 31st-ranked Francis Marion on Saturday. The Peach Belt Conference match took place at the Walden Tennis Center. 

Columbus State (20-2, 9-0) wrapped up their regular season going undefeated in conference play for the second straight season. Their lone two losses of the season came to the top-ranked Division II and top-ranked NAIA teams. 

The Cougars got the match started by dominating all three courts in doubles play. 

Top-ranked Alvaro Regalado and Zach Whaanga had a showdown against 18th-ranked William Anth-Forsberg and Charlie Hutchings on the top doubles court. They grabbed the 6-2 win while KP Pannu and Tommaso Schold also won by the same scoreline. 

Oover at third Arnold Kokulewski and Matei Avram pulled out the 6-4 victory as the Cougars earned the point sweeping past the Patriots in doubles. 

The Cougars would then go to work in singles play picking up five straight set wins. 

Top-ranked Pannu would cruise to the 6-1, 6-1 win at the top singles court while 29th-ranked Whaanga grinded out a 6-4, 7-6 victory to earn another point for the Cougars. 

Fabien Asdrubal got the nod at third singles and kept the Cougars rolling as he squeaked out the 6-4, 7-5 point.

CSU would roll in the final two singles courts with 49th-ranked Kokulewski coming out on top 6-1, 6-1 at fifth while 65th-ranked Avram won 6-1, 6-2 at sixth. 

Over at fourth 36th-ranked Regalado was up 5-0 before his opponent bowed out.

Columbus State wrapped up their regular season play securing 20 wins and will prepare for the upcoming Peach Belt Conference Tournament. The action will begin Friday, April 19 in Florence, S.C.
