FLORENCE, S.C. - The top-ranked Columbus State University men's tennis team took down 32nd-ranked Francis Marion in a 4-0 sweep on Saturday. The Peach Belt Conference quarterfinal took place at Francis Marion.
Columbus State (21-2) advances to the semifinals which will also take place later Saturday due to the inclement weather on Friday. The Cougars are slated to take on 7th-ranked Lander at 3:00 p.m. with a berth to the final on the line.
The match lasted just 89 minutes as the Cougars came storming out of the gates winning the doubles point. It was a ranked battle at the top spot with the top-ranked doubles duo of Zach Whaanga and Alvaro Regalado taking on 17th-ranked William Anth-Forsberg and Charlie Hutchings. In a tight match it was the Cougars who came out on top in the end winning 6-4.Â
Over at second doubles KP Pannu and Tommaso Schold teamed up for the 6-2 victory while Matei Avram and Arnold Kokulewski fell at third 1-6. The two wins for CSU though gave them the doubles points heading into singles play.Â
Needing just three points to win, the Cougars got the job done in quick fashion. Top-ranked singles player Pannu gave up just one game on his court grabbing the point 6-0, 6-1.Â
At third singles, Regalado took down his counterpart in straight sets 6-0, 6-2 with Schold also grabbing a straight set triumph 6-1, 6-2 over at sixth.
The other three singles courts went unfinished after the Cougars clinched the fourth and winning point of the match.Â
Despite going unfinished, the other three courts all saw CSU in front.Â
75th-ranked Fabien Asdrubal was on top 6-4, 3-0 at second with his teammate 60th-ranked Kokulewski bouncing back 6-3, 4-1. Over at fifth it was 66th-ranked Avram up a set, leading 6-4, 0-2 before the match concluded.
