COLUMBUS - The Columbus State University baseball team scratched their way to a 6-5 comeback in Friday's game against Young Harris. The Peach Belt Conference game took place at Burger King Stadium.

Down 5-2 entering the 8th inning, the Cougars put up a late rally that fans at Ragsdale Field have become accustomed to this season.

It all started with an error by the Young Harris shortstop to lead off the inning which then opened the door for back-to-back singles to load the bases with no one out.

After a pitching change, Grant Berry went first pitch swinging and hit an infield single to second base making it a 5-3 game.

Drew Webb went one bag over snatching an infield single to the shortstop to cut the deficit to one before Robert Brooks grabbed another infield hit to the shortstop to tie the game at five-apiece.

After three infield hits to tie the game, the Mountain Lions sent a wild pitch to the backstop allowing Berry to come home putting CSU in front for the first time all game.

Young Harris would work their magic to get out of the inning without giving up anymore runs, giving them one last hope entering the ninth.

The Peach Belt Conference saves leader Devin Dudal came in and with a man in scoring position struck out the final batter to collect his 11th save this year.

"Sowerbrower did a great job tonight and helped us get to the back-end of our bullpen," said head coach Greg Appleton. "You could tell the momentum swung our way in the eighth. Obviously I would've liked more runs there but Dudal came in and closed out the win."

The Cougars only other runs came in the bottom of the fourth when Chase Brown smacked a two-run home run to right center, his third one this season.

While the CSU offense fluttered early on, it was starting pitcher Sam Sowerbrower who kept them in the game on the cold rainy night. The senior painted a masterpiece going seven strong innings, giving up just five hits while striking out eight.

Sowerbrower (4-1) has pitched at least seven innings in three consecutive starts while racking up a total of 30 strikeouts.

Brown finished 1-for-3 at the plate but hit the crucial home run giving him two RBI's while Brooks grabbed two hits and an RBI.

The Cougars and Mountain Lions will be back in action Saturday, April 20 for the final game of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
