PEMBROKE, N.C. - The Columbus State University women's soccer team came up short in a 2-1 overtime decision to UNC Pembroke Saturday afternoon. The Peach Belt Conference match took place at the Lumbee River EMC Stadium in Pembroke, N.C.
With the Lady Cougars holding a late lead in regulation, UNC Pembroke (5-1, 1-0 PBC) found the equalizer off a free kick in the 85
th minute to send the match to overtime.
In the extra period,
Kimmy May nearly ended the contest for the Lady Cougars, but her shot was saved keeping the Braves alive. In the 96
th minute, UNC Pembroke earned a corner leading to the golden goal by Rilee Seering.
"Hats off to UNC Pembroke," commented head coach
Jay Entlich. "You have to play a full 90-minute match, and they did that today."
Columbus State (4-4, 0-2) kept the pressure on UNC Pembroke early in the match. The Lady Cougars earned seven corner kicks over the first 45 minutes of play, but only managed four shots. One of the better looks came late in the half as a
Michelle Lamorte shot went just wide. A few seconds later, a
Parker Morgan attempted had to be saved at the net.
The Lady Cougars began the second half with more urgency. Over the first 10 minutes, CSU had three dangerous looks at the net, but were denied each time.
However in the 63
rd minute, Columbus State broke through. Racing down the sideline, freshman
Bre Harvey found senior
Riley Clark in the center of the box. Clark slid it by the keeper to put the Lady Cougars in front.
Anguilm nearly gave CSU a 2-0 lead in the 70
th minute, but her shot went just high above the crossbar. That would be CSU's final shot in regulation.
Overall, UNC Pembroke outshot the Lady Cougars 14-11 with CSU holding a commanding 12-2 advantage in corner kicks. The Lady Cougars were whistled for 13 fouls compared to five on the Braves.
Columbus State will return home to host eighth-ranked Flagler on Wednesday, Oct. 2 at the Walden Soccer Complex for Ovarian Cancer Awareness Day. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
