COLUMBUS - The second-ranked Columbus State University men's tennis team began a busy weekend with a 7-0 victory over Auburn Montgomery on Friday afternoon. The nonconference match took place at the John W. Walden Tennis Center in Columbus.
The Cougars (3-0) kicked things off by sweeping all three doubles matches to earn the first point of the afternoon.
Tommaso Schold and
Pietro Martinetti had the most impressive performance on the day recording a 6-1 victory in the third spot.
Alvaro Regalado and
Javier Cueto Ramos (6-4, 1st doubles) and
Matei Avram and
Christian Garay (6-3, 2nd doubles) also grabbed wins on Friday.
First and fourth singles were over quickly as Columbus State went up 3-0. Second-ranked Regalado breezed to a 6-1, 6-1 win at the top spot while Garay made quick work of Nino Portugal taking fourth singles by the same score. Cueto Ramos (6-3, 6-4, 3rd singles) and Schold (6-2, 6-3,5th singles) were set straight winners in their respected matches.
Columbus State had to go to the third and decisive set at both second and sixth singles. After dropping the first set at the second spot,
Fabien Asdrubal rebounded to win 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 over Joao Guariente. It was a similar story at sixth singles where Martinetti went down a set before getting things in gear. The freshman took the final two sets 6-2, 10-4 to pick up the win over Giovanni Bellio.
Columbus State will take Saturday off before taking the courts again on Sunday against No. 16 West Alabama. The match will begin at 2 p.m. at the Walden Tennis Center.
