Cougars Sweep Division I Alabama State

The Cougars were leading in all six singles matches when play was called.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The second-ranked Columbus State University men's tennis team opened the spring 2020 season in style on Sunday sweeping Division I Alabama State 4-0. The match took place at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center in Montgomery, Ala.

The Cougars had to fight to earn the doubles point in their first match of the year. CSU and ASU split the first two matches before Alvaro Regalado and Christian Garay won at the top spot 6-4. Tommaso Schold and Pietro Martinetti were 6-2 winners at the third position.

Columbus State was quite impressive in singles play on Sunday. Second-ranked Regalado made quick work of his opponent at the top spot taking the match 6-2, 6-0. In his Cougar debut, Garay notched a 6-2, 6-0 win at fourth singles while Schold took his match 6-1, 6-2 at the fifth spot.

In the unfinished matches, all three Cougars were just two games away from victories. Fabien Asdrubal was up 6-4, 4-2 at second singles with Javier Cueto Ramos leading 6-4, 4-1 at third. At the final spot, Justin Welz held a 6-3, 4-2 advantage.

The Cougars will have their home opener at the John W. Walden Tennis Center on Saturday, Feb. 15 against Anderson. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
