COLUMBUS - The No. 8 Columbus State University women's soccer team broke a scoreless first half by scoring six goals over the final 45 minutes of play to defeat USC Aiken 6-1 on Saturday. The Peach Belt Conference match took place at the Walden Soccer Complex.
After firing 15 shots in the first half, including banging a penalty kick off the post in the second minute, Columbus State (9-0-1, 4-0-0 PBC) found the scoring touch in the second half.
"Sometimes you have to be patient waiting on goals," commented head coach
Jay Entlich. "We were much more efficient in the second half and made the extra passes to secure good looks. You have to give credit to Aiken for some of their play, especially in the first half.
The Cougars nearly got on the board right before the half, but USC Aiken kept a
Vanessa Aviles attempt out of the net, thanks to a key team save by a member of the backline.
The scoring barrage began in the 48th minute when
Parker Morgan headed home a goal off a cross by
Maria Kilset. Less than 90- seconds later,
Emma Beddow made it 2-0 after receiving a pass from
Maddie DeFranco.
In the 70th minute,
Maddy Peterson scored her first goal of the season on a diving header attempt. Morgan set up the play on a nice chip pass into the box.
Lizz Forshaw made it 4-0 in the 74th minute, while
Sage Smith scored her first collegiate goal in the 88th minute for the final Cougar goal.
Charlotte Mannella found the back of the net for USC Aiken (2-6-0, 1-3-0 PBC) in the 85th.
Overall, the Cougars outshot the Pacers 30-4 and held a 13-0 corner kick advantage.
Sara Halilhodzic played a clean first half in net, while
Lizzie Hedrick allowed the second-half goal.

Columbus State will head to Harrogate, Tenn. for a non-conference matchup with Lincoln Memorial University on Wednesday, Oct. 6 at 3 p.m.

• The five goals tied a season-high for Columbus State. The Cougars also scored five against Saint Leo University on Sept. 22.
• The Cougars have now won seven in a row and are unbeaten over their last 13 matches dating
• Beddow has scored in five straight matches. It's the longest streak by a Cougar since Riley Clark scored in nine consecutive matches in the 2019 season
• The 30 shots by Columbus State were the most in a match since Oct. 24, 2018, when CSU fired off 30 against Tusculum University
• CSU improves to 19-0-0 all-time against USC Aiken
