Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Josh Fuller

Cold Shooting Dooms Cougars

CSU shot just 28.4% against the Bobcats in the loss.

COLUMBUS - A cold shooting night haunted the Columbus State University men's basketball team as the Cougars dropped a 59-49 decision to Georgia College in Peach Belt Conference action Wednesday night inside the Frank G. Lumpkin Jr. Center.

The Cougars (4-6, 4-6) shot just 28.4% (19-for-67) overall while going 4-for-23 beyond the arc.

"We have to play better on the offensive side of the court," commented head coach Robert Moore. "Our defense was outstanding tonight, but we couldn't hit shots. Hopefully, we can establish a rhythm next time out on Saturday."

How It Happened
First Half

Columbus State was in control to begin the game as the Cougars raced out to an 8-2 lead before the first media timeout. It was Hunter Preston who got Columbus State going with a 3-pointer, a lay-up and then helped jumpstart a Lederris Jones trifecta with a block. With the Bobcats closing in on the lead midway through the half, the Cougars turned up the defensive heat, getting back-to-back steals off inbound passes to help fuel a 6-0 spurt. Lorenzo Anderson scored four of the six points to stretch CSU's lead to 18-8 and later gave the Cougars their largest lead of the night at the 6:47 mark after a layup made it a 22-10 game. Things quickly changed from there as the Bobcats scored the next 11 points and closed out the half on a 13-2 run.

Second Half

The Cougars still led coming out of the half, but Georgia College (7-2, 7-2) scored the first two buckets to inch ahead 27-24. Needing a spark, Kalen Clifton got going for the Cougars as the senior poured in the next five points, including hitting a 3-pointer, to put the Cougars in front 29-27. The two rivals would exchange buckets and the lead on the next two possessions, however GC would proceed to go on a 13-2 run from there to pull ahead 43-33 with just over eight minutes to play. Down the stretch, Columbus State managed to get the deficit down to five on multiple occasions, including in the final two minutes, but was unable to string enough plays together for the successful comeback.

Box Score Breakdown

• Christian Chambers was the leading scorer for the Cougars with 13 points. The freshman was 5-for-9 from the floor, including going 1-for-3 on his 3-point attempts. It was his highest point total since also scoring 13 against Georgia Southwestern University.
• Anderson was the only other Cougar in double-digits in points with 11. The junior has scored 10 or more points in five out of the past six games.
• Anthony Moore had a team-high 10 rebounds. It's the third time this year the senior has grabbed 10 or more boards.
• Preston recorded a career-high five blocks on Wednesday. He is one of just two players in the PBC this season to have a five-block performance.
• Columbus State's bench scored 24 of the 49 points and outscored their counterparts 24-3.
• Both teams combined to go 7-for-37 (18.9%) from 3-point range.

Cougar Notes

• Columbus State had 11 blocked shots on Wednesday, the most in any game by the Cougars since Nov. 21, 2015 (11 vs. University of West Georgia).
• The 11 blocks are also the most by any PBC school this season. In fact, CSU has the two top shot blocking games this year in the conference with their eight swats against Flagler College ranking second.
• However, CSU set season lows in points, field goal percentage and assists (nine).
• It was the first time in five games that Columbus State was out-rebounded. Georgia College won the rebounding margin 49-39.
• The loss snapped a two-game home winning streak for the Cougars.
• Columbus State still leads the all-time series 53-28 over Georgia College.
