MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The top-ranked Columbus State University men's tennis team closed the weekend with its second win in as many days as the Cougars defeated Auburn University Montgomery 6-1 on Sunday. The match took place at the AUM Tennis Complex.
CSU (2-0) wasted no time picking up the first point of the afternoon. The Cougars won all three doubles matches, including a 6-0 victory at the second spot by
Christian Garay and
Felix Steen. First doubles was the tightest, but
Alvaro Regalado and
Javier Cueto Ramos walked away with a 6-4 win.
Pietro Martinetti and
Tommaso Schold capped off the sweep at third doubles with a 6-2 win.Â
In singles action, the Cougars won five of the six matches to finish off the Warhawks. Cueto Ramos was the first to grab a victory as he defeated his opponent 6-0, 6-2 at fourth singles. Steen needed an extra set at the fifth spot, but he had no problem in the decisive frame. The native of Germany took the match 6-0, 2-6, 6-1.
Regalado bounced back on Sunday to win a 6-4, 7-6 straight-set decision at first singles, while
Justin Welz won in two sets, 7-6, 6-1, at the sixth position. CSU's final point of the afternoon was a three-set thriller won by Schold at third singles. After dropping the first set, Schold stormed back to win 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
AUM (1-3) won its lone match of the day at second singles where David Rieme defeated Garay 6-3, 6-4.Â
Columbus State will now prepare to defend its title at the ITA National Indoor Championships in Oklahoma City next week.Â
