Box Score OKLAHOMA CITY - The top-ranked and first-seeded Columbus State University men's tennis team advanced to the semifinal round of the ITA National Indoor Championship following a 4-0 win over No. 22 and eighth-seeded Midwestern State University on Friday. The event is taking place at the OKC Tennis Center.
Looking to defend its title from last year, the Cougars will face No. 7 and fourth-seeded Drury University on Saturday for a spot in the championship. Drury defeated Concordia University Irvin 4-2 in its opening-round match.
"I thought this was the best match we've played so far this year," stated head coach
Evan Isaacs. "It only gets tougher here on out, so we have to focus in and continue to improve every time we hit the court."
The Cougars (3-0) won first and third doubles to gain the early 1-0 advantage.
Alvaro Regalado and
Javier Cueto Ramos took the top spot 6-2, while
Tommaso Schold and
Pietro Martinetti also took their match by the same score.
Christian Garay and
Felix Steen were ahead 5-4 at the time CSU clinched the point.
Columbus State made quick work of Midwestern State in singles play. The Cougars recorded the three wins they needed to advance to the semifinals at third, fourth and sixth singles. Schold improved to 3-0 on the year thanks to a 6-4, 6-4 victory at third singles. Cueto Ramos was also a straight-set winner at the fourth spot, taking the match 6-4, 6-2. At the sixth position, Steen put together the most impressive match of the day as the second-year freshman on 6-2, 6-3.
The remaining three matches were in the third set when play was called.
Friday's win was the 12th in a row for the Cougars and the 19th straight regular-season victory dating back to 2019.Â
