COLUMBUS - The top-ranked Columbus State University men's tennis team put together an impressive showing on Saturday, sweeping both No. 25 Southwest Baptist University and the University of Montevallo. Both non-conference matches took place at the John W. Walden Tennis Center.
CSU (9-0) first defeated SBU 4-0 in the morning for its sixth top-25 win of the season before a 7-0 showing against the Falcons. The wins pushed the Cougars' regular-season winning streak to 26 matches.Â
vs. Southwest Baptist
The Cougars didn't have a problem against No. 25 Southwest Baptist during the morning session. In doubles play, CSU dropped just four games, sweeping all three matches to earn the first point. Alvaro Regalado and Javier Cueto Ramos took first doubles 6-1, while Chrisitan Garay and Felix Steen matched the pair with a 6-1 win at the second position. Tommaso Schold and Pietro Martinetti moved to 7-0 on the year after a 6-2 victory at third doubles.
It was a race to the finish in singles play as the Cougars needed just three wins to clinch the match. Schold finished up first at third singles with an impressive 6-2, 6-1 decision over Alvaro Nunez. It wasn't too far after that Cueto Ramos earned a point at the fourth spot. The second-year freshman recorded a 6-1, 6-3 victory. Steen put away the Bearcats at fifth singles. After taking the first set 6-4, Steen blanked Max Sanoja to send the Cougars off winners.
vs. Montevallo
After a couple of hours off the court, the Cougars wasted no time gaining control against Montevallo. Columbus State won all three doubles matches, including a dominating 6-1 win by Steen and Garay in the second position. Regalado and Cueto Ramos were 6-2 winners at the top spot, while Martinetti and Schold took third doubles 6-3.
The Cougars flexed their muscles in singles action, losing just 11 games in the six matches. Steen and Martinetti recorded 6-0, 6-0 shutouts at fifth and sixth, singles respectively. Garay and Cueto Ramos nearly did the same in their matches. Garay walked away from second singles with a 6-1, 6-0 win, while Cueto Ramos posted an identical result in the fourth position.
Schold continued the winning ways at third singles with a 6-1, 6-3 victory to stay unbeaten this season. To finish off the day, Regalado won first singles by the score of 6-2, 6-4.
