DAHLONEGA, Ga. - The top-ranked Columbus State University men's tennis team shut out its sixth Peach Belt Conference opponent this season after a 7-0 victory over 12th-ranked University of North Georgia on Sunday. The match was played at the UNG Tennis Complex at Yahoola Creek.
The Cougars (15-0, 6-0 PBC) recorded wins in all three doubles matches against the Nighthawks. To begin the day,
Tommaso Schold and
Pietro Martinetti raced to a 6-2 win against Jared Bones and Giulio Sassi at third doubles. Second doubles was the next to finish up as
Christian Garay and
Felix Steen grabbed a 6-4 decision over Zach Waldow and Joaquin Benoit.Â
The second-ranked duo of
Alvaro Regalado and
Javier Cueto Ramos capped off the doubles sweep in the top position with a 6-4 win over Ryan Gaskin and Kevin Candido.Â
North Georgia (9-2, 4-1) didn't put up much of a challenge in singles play as the Cougars took all six matches. 28th-ranked Schold began the domination with a 6-3, 6-3 win at third singles against Daniel Ostap before second-ranked Regalado notched a 6-2, 6-3 outcome at first singles over 31st-ranked Gaskin.Â
Cueto Ramos increased CSU's lead after taking fourth singles by the score of 6-2, 7-6 against Waldow. At second doubles, 14th-ranked Garay and Benoit battled in a tightly contested first set, with Garay coming away with a 7-6 (6-0) set-win. The Cougar followed it up with a 6-4 outcome to take the match 7-6, 6-4. Welz was another straight-set winner for CSU after a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Sassi. Sixth singles was the only match to go into a third set as Martinetti and Kevin Candido split the first two sets. The second-year freshman was able to overcome his opponent to walk away with a 10-7 tiebreak win to seize the 6-7 (4-6), 6-2, 10-7 decision.Â
