DAHLONEGA, Ga. - For the fourth straight time, the top-ranked and top-seeded Columbus State University men's tennis team captured the NCAA Southeast Regional title as the Cougars swept 10th-ranked and third-seeded University of North Georgia 4-0 in the regional championship on Sunday. The regional was hosted at the UNG Tennis Complex at Yahoola Creek.
With the win, CSU (21-0) advances to the NCAA Championship that will be held in Surprise, Ariz. at the Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex from May 18-20. The final eight teams will be reseeded for the quarterfinal round and will be released in the upcoming days.
"I want to congratulate our guys for an awesome weekend of tennis," commented head coach
Evan Isaacs. "We are one step closer to accomplishing our ultimate goal, but we can't let up. Things are just going to get more difficult from here on out and we have to be prepared."
The Cougars jumped out to the early lead after claiming the doubles point as they have done all season long. The top-ranked duo of
Alvaro Regalado and
Javier Cueto Ramos claimed the first victory on Sunday at first doubles with a 6-3 decision over Ryan Gaskin and Kevin Candido. Not too long after that,
Pietro Martinetti and
Tommaso Schold clinched the point after a 6-3 win against Jared Bones and Daniel Ostap at third doubles.
Felix Steen and
Christian Garay were in a tough 5-5 battle at second doubles with Zach Waldwo and Joaquin Benoit when play was called.
The backend of CSU's singles lineup got the job done with third, fourth and fifth singles going the Cougars' way. Schold was the first Cougar to finish off his opponent at third singles. The 32nd-ranked player in the nation took down Ostap 6-2, 6-1 to grab the win. At fourth singles, it was Cueto Ramos who walked away victorious over Waldow 6-4, 6-4.Â
The race was on for the clinching win until
Justin Welz seized the moment. The freshman won fifth singles 6-3, 6-4 over Giulio Sassi to send Columbus State to the national quarterfinals.
The Cougars were leading in the unfinished matches and were moments away from a 7-0 sweep. At first singles, second-ranked Regalado was two games away from finishing off 21st-ranked Gaskin. Second and sixth singles were both just a game away from a Cougar win as 15th-ranked Garay and Martinetti both leading their opponents.
Columbus State will head to Arizona on a 30-match winning streak and looking to advance to its third straight national championship match.
