COLUMBUS - The 20th-ranked Columbus State University women's soccer team began the season with a 2-1 victory over Embry-Riddle University on Friday night at the John Walden Soccer Complex.
The Cougars got two first-half goals, including one from
Parker Morgan in the sixth minute, to put the hosts on top early.
"This was a solid win to open the year," commented head coach
Jay Entlich. "It would have been nice to see a few more goals, but it's very early and we will see what we need to correct after watching the film. Hats off to Embry-Riddle. They pushed us tonight and are a very well-coached team."
The 22nd minute saw two goals with
Rachael Sweigard putting Columbus State ahead 2-0 thanks to a rocket off her right foot. However, the Eagles pulled right back within one after Marie Seim cleaned up a deflection in the box to put Embry-Riddle on the board.
Columbus State's defense played tough for the remainder of the match, limiting ERAU to just two shots on goal the entire night.
The Cougars outshot the Eagles 14-9 overall and held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Sara Halilhodzic picked up the win in the net after playing the first half with
Lizzie Hedrick wrapping up the final 45 minutes of action.
Sweigard led all players with five shots on Friday.
Columbus State will be back on the pitch on Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Walden Soccer Complex against Christian Brothers University.
