COLUMBUS - The 20th-ranked Columbus State University women's soccer team executed a perfect set-piece in the second half to score the lone goal to defeat Christian Brothers University 1-0 on Sunday at the Walden Soccer Complex.
With the match still scoreless heading into the 53rd minute, the Cougars (2-0-0) lined up for a corner kick on the far side of the field.
Maria Kilset played a ball on the ground just outside of the box, where
Rachael Sweigard rocketed home a goal near the upper-right 90. It's the second goal in as many matches for the senior.
CSU's defense held up over the final 37 minutes with goalkeeper
Lizzie Hedrick making three saves to collect a combined shutout with
Sara Halilhodzic.
"That was a fine way to close out a great weekend of soccer," commented head coach
Jay Entlich. "Rachael finished off that corner flawlessly, and I thought our defense was solid today against a team that scored three goals on Friday.
I would like to thank all the teams for coming down and anyone who made this season-opening tournament a success."
The Cougars had two dangerous looks in the opening half with shot attempts by
Emma Beddow and Kilset being denied by Christian Brother's (1-1-0) goalkeeper Riley Chafin.
The Lady Buccaneers did outshoot the Cougars 9-7 in the second half, but couldn't find the back of the net. Overall, Columbus State held a 16-12 shot advantage and a 10-2 corner kick advantage.
Columbus State will prepare to hit the road for the first time in 2021 with a trip to North Carolina next week for matches against Catawba College (Sept. 9, 7 p.m.) and Queens University (Sept. 11, 12 p.m.)
