Cougars cruise to the final four in PBC tournament with win over Clayton State

5 different Cougars scored goals vs The Lakers

COLUMBUS -  The No. 3 Columbus State University women's soccer team started their quest for a conference tournament championship with a bang. The Cougars defeated Clayton State 5-0 in their quarterfinal match.

Columbus State showed that they are a complete team with goals from five different Cougars. Freshman, sophomores, and graduate seniors all contributed in what was a complete team effort to down The Lakers. The Cougars will move on to face The Lander Bearcats in the final four on Sunday October 30th.

Scoring Breakdown:
  • The top-seeded Cougars fired many shots in the first half, but a stingy Laker defense held CSU scoreless until Maria Kilset broke the scoreboard in the 30th minute with a shot from a corner kick that found the back of the net. A beauty from the corner gave the Cougars all they needed momentum wise as they struck again in the 32nd minute when sophomore stud Emma Beddow scored off a penalty kick. Beddow is an absolute force to be reckoned with as this was her 16th goal on the year.
  • Senior Lizzie Hedrick had yet another scoreless half under her belt. She had three of the four Cougar saves on the day and continues to be on lockdown on goal duties.
  • It didn't take long for CSU to score in the second half as freshman Sarah Hungerford put one in the back of the net during the 58th minute on a fast break in which she needled her way through the Clayton State defense. This goal would be Hungerford's seventh on the season.
  • More action came during the 74th minute when a perfect pass from Lizz Forshaw came Abi Akerson's way. Akerson scored her fifth goal of the year with her right foot. She continues to be lightning in a bottle off the bench for The Cougars.
  • The finally goal of the evening came in the 88th minute when Brooke Yount joined in on all the scoring. Another fabulous freshman for The Cougars, Brooke nailed her second goal of the season and her first taste of postseason soccer. With this score Lizz Forshaw collected her second assist of the Match.
  • Sara Halilhodzic started the second half in goal and rejected the only shot that came her way. Halilhodzic and Hedrick combined for their sixth shut out in row. Scoring comes tough against The Cougar tandem.
