Men's Basketball Dominates in Season Opener

The Cougars out-scored Barton College 95-66 to begin the 2022-23 season with a victory.

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - The Columbus State University men's basketball team dominated Barton College 95-66 in the 2022-23 season opener Friday evening in the Mount Olive Pickle Classic hosted by the University Mount Olive.

The Cougars started off slow, falling behind Barton 10-0 within the first four minutes of play. However, the Cougars got into the groove by the end of the first half, minimizing Barton's lead to only two, ending the half 42-40.

CSU came out hot after halftime, immediately taking the lead within the first two minutes of the second half. The Cougars never looked back as the team was able to outshoot the Bulldogs the rest of the game.

NOTES:
  • Demierre Black and Grant Howard led CSU with 16 points each
  • The Cougars shot 51 percent (35-of-69) from the field including 55 percent (18-of-33) from behind the three-point line
  • CSU made 18 three-pointers as a team, with five players scoring in double-digits - Black (16), Howard (16), Wisdom Uboh (14), Nelson Haskin (12) and Joshua Jerome (12)
  • Haskin led the Cougars with nine rebounds while Howard and Jerome each grabbed eight
  • Haskin made three blocks in the season opener
