MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - The Columbus State University men's basketball team downs the University of Mount Olive in a thrilling game Saturday night, scoring four points in the final 13 seconds to secure the 66-63 victory. The game was played inside Mount Olive's Kornegay Arena and was the final game of the Mount Olive Pickle Classic.
With 13 seconds left in the game and trailing by one point, a missed free-throw by Mount Olive's Shane Peterson gave CSU a chance. Grant Howard grabbed the defensive rebound and fed the ball to Daniel Melvin. Melvin's made layup put the Cougars ahead 64-63. Demierre Black then stole the ball from UMO's Michael Brown and put the ball in the hands of Joshua Jerome, who made the final seconds of the game exhilarating with a dunk.
NOTES:
- CSU and UMO were tied 34-34 going into halftime, but the Cougars outscored the Trojans 32-29 in the second half.
- Melvin led CSU with 20 points, shooting 55 percent (6-for-11) from behind the three-point line.
- Jerome tallied 11 points and shot 71 percent (5-for-7) from the field.
- Nelson Haskin grabbed 11 rebounds for CSU.
- Black was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.
