Columbus State Defeats Flagler College in Round One of the Southeast Regional

The Cougars will continue their dance in the Southeast Regional after winning the match 2-1 in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

HICKORY, N.C. - The No. 4 ranked Columbus State University women's soccer team defeated familiar Peach Belt Conference foe No. 5 Flagler College 2-1 in the first round of the 2023 NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Tournament hosted by the region No. 1 seeded Lenoir-Rhyne on Friday, Nov. 17. 

This was the third meeting between the Cougars and Saints this season. Both teams played outstanding defense in the first half, allowing no goals and ending the first-half tied 0-0.

Senior Anna Grady and sophomore Abigail Akerson each scored second-half goals to lead the Cougars to a 2-1 victory over the Saints. Sage Smith provided the assist to Akerson on the Cougars' second goal. Graduate student Lizzie Hedrick tallied 6 saves in goal and only allowed 1 goal in 90 minutes of play. 

NOTES
  • Anna Grady scored her 11th goal of the season and the first goal of the match in the 56th minute off a penalty kick 
  • Flagler College tied things up in the 63rd minute off a penalty kick goal from Liirios Rizo
  • Abigail Akerson answered right back and scored in the 64th minute off an assist from Sage Smith to put the Cougars up 2-1 
  • CSU had an 9-3 edge on corner kicks 
  • The Saints had a 22-15 shot advantage in the match 
UP NEXT 
The Cougars advance to the second round of the 2023 Division II Women's Soccer Southeast Regional where they will play the winner of the match between No. 1 Lenior-Rhyne and No. 8 Carson-Newman. The second round will be held on Sunday, Nov. 19 at 2 p.m. in Hickory, N.C., hosted by Lenior-Rhyne.
