COLUMBUS - The No. 6 Columbus State University baseball team split a doubleheader against the Nighthawks on Saturday, March 11 at Ragsdale Field. The Cougars won the first game 10-0 and UNG took the second game 3-2. CSU is now 16-4 on the year and 9-2 in PBC play. North Georgia moves to 11-9 and 5-6 in conference play.
GAME 1: CSU 10, UNG 3
A game that started on Friday but due to a power outage was finished on Saturday ended up being worth the wait as
Noah Windhorst made Columbus State baseball history. Windhorst was as dominant as ever and he prove yet again why he is one of the top arms in the conference as he pitched a complete game striking out six Nighthawks while allowing no hits. He was three walks away from being perfect. He is now third in the PBC in innings pitched with 38.1 and he is fourth in era with a mark of 1.88.Â
The offense put the pressure on North Georgia early as
Steven Minter hit his second homerun of the season. That was one of Minter's three hits in the game.
Isaiah Hernandez and
Connor Kirley both had two hits a piece.
Matthew McDade had the most RBI's for the Cougars with three as he also scored two runs himself.
GAME 2: CSU 2, UNG 3
North Georgia capitalized on some Cougars miscues on defense as they scored two runs on wild pitches in the game. The Nighthawks also smacked an opposite field homerun to extend the UNG lead to two. Columbus State battled back in the
Isaiah Hernandez lined one through the right side to plate
Isaac Bouton.Â
The Nighthawks pushed another run across in the sixth inning but CSU responded immediately as
Connor Kirley singled to right field scoring
Colby Brabston who singled earlier in the inning.Â
Colton Joyner was fantastic for the Cougars as he struck out a season-high of 11 batters but the bullpen for North Georgia was lights out as they shutout the Cougars once they took their starter out. UNG did not allow a hit after the sixth inning.
