PENSACOLA, Fla. - The No. 4 Columbus State University baseball team stuns the University of West Florida with a five run ninth inning to beat the Argonauts 8-5 on Tuesday, March 21. Columbus State is now 20-6 (11-4 PBC) and West Florida falls to 13-12 on the season and 5-7 in GSC play.
The Cougars jumped out on the Argonauts early as
Matthew McDade got the scoring started with an RBI double into the right field corner.
Trace Twardoski then scorched a ball through the left side to plate McDade. West Florida immediately responded in the bottom half of the inning where they got two runs of their own, tying the game 2-2.
Derek Wylie came up in the third inning and knocked out his 13th homerun of the season. Wylie's 40th RBI of the season hit the West Florida indoor facility over the left field wall. The Argonauts responded instantly again as they scored off an RBI ground-out to second base, making it 3-3.
Logan Seehafer came out of the bullpen in the sixth inning and turned in his third consecutive scoreless outing where he got four outs for the Cougars, two of which were strikeouts. The Argonauts took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the eighth, scoring two runs on an RBI single to right field.
Columbus State was down to their last three outs but there is no quit in the Cougar squad. CSU quickly loaded the bases on two walks and a hit-by-pitch. McDade scolded a ball past the second baseman and the Cougars scored two to tie the game 5-5. Wylie then singled to left field to put the Cougars on top 6-5. CSU scored again when
Seth Nelson beat out a double-play ball to score the runner from third and the last run came in via base on balls.
Ryan Suppa closed the door on the Argonauts in the bottom of the ninth by striking out two and by getting a weak pop up. Suppa earned his first win in a Cougar uniform and now has four straight appearances of striking out two batters and not giving up a run.Â
