Hungerford’s Brace Boosts No. 2 Lady Cougars Past Bearcats

CSU downs Lander in a 2-1 road victory

GREENWOOD, S.C. – No. 2-ranked Columbus State Women's Soccer hit the road on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. ET Peach Belt Conference match at Lander (S.C.).

The Lady Cougars (14-0-1, 8-0-0 PBC) downed the Bearcats (7-2-4, 2-2-3 PBC) with a 2-1 victory at Van Taylor Stadium in Greenwood, S.C. for the first of two PBC road bouts this week.

First Half

Lander attacked the Columbus State backline early and swiftly, taking two shots within the first 70 seconds of play. The hosts would eventually catch the Lady Cougars on their heels and struck gold first in the third minute, as Alarie Hodge's goal helped to capture control of the game early.

It wasn't until the 10:07 mark that the Lady Cougars would register their first shot of the night as Abigail Akerson missed the mark. Seconds later, Sarah Hungerford blazed past several Bearcats by dribbling all the way from the halfway line and perfectly placing the equalizer in the back of the net in the 11th minute.

Within the following minute, CSU recorded a pair of blocked shots from both Hungerford and Emma Beddow as the Lander defense held tough against the Lady Cougars' threatening attack.

For about the next 10 or so minutes, Columbus State only produced two shots while Lander recorded one. The hosts followed up minutes later with a shot on goal saved by Heidi Harris, keeping the 1-1 draw intact.

The Bearcats would go on to total four more shots before the intermission while CSU tallied one final shot from Elle Henschel in the 41st minute which was denied by Lander's keeper. Lander held a 10-7 advantage in total shots while both teams notched two shots on goal each. LU also led 4-3 in corners.

Second Half

Hungerford ripped the first shot of the second half off the mark and high in the 48th minute and was followed by a missed attempt from Lander in the 52nd minute. Anna LaBarbera attempted a shot of her own in the 56th minute and missed the mark as well.

Lander recorded the first shot on goal in the 60th minute with Harris making another save to keep the Bearcats out of the goal. After another missed attempt from the hosts, Faith Knoedler pressured the LU keeper with a low corner shot but was denied.

CSU would go on to register a pair of shots from Lauren Barnes followed by another Lander shot turned save by Harris in the 67th minute. After a chunk of time fell off the clock with no real offensive opportunities, Hungerford blasted a ball into the upper 90 from the far corner of the 18-yard box to lift the Lady Cougars over Lander in the 80th minute.

Harris was forced to make one final save in the dying seconds of the match to help secure the 2-1 victory and keep the unblemished conference record safe. Both teams totaled six shot each in the second half with LU leading 5-3 in corner kicks.
