Cougars Close Clayton State Classic with Tight Win Against Edward Waters

CSU goes 2-0 in Morrow

MORROW, Ga. – Columbus State University men's basketball continue with the Clayton State Classic on Saturday afternoon with a matchup against Edward Waters (Fla.) at "The Loch" in Morrow, Ga.

The Cougars (4-1) picked up the second win of the weekend against the Tigers (3-2) in a narrow 74-71 victory.

First Half

Both teams battled early in the first half, trading trips down the floor and switching control of the lead nearly every scoring possession. In the first five minutes, CSU held a 13-10 lead which would be the largest lead the Cougars held in the half.

Edward Waters took the next couple of minutes to go on a 7-2 run to lead 17-15. A trey from Jarrett Adderton quickly flipped the scoreboard, but EWU continue to respond. After leveling at 26-26 with five minutes to play, the Tigers followed with an 8-2 spurt for their largest lead in the first half.

With under two minutes to play, Columbus State surged with a six-point response to close out the half with a 34-34 draw.

Second Half

The Tigers jumped to a two-point lead early, yet the Cougars prowled into lead position with a combination of fastbreak scores from Roman Son, a three-pointer from Jehloni James, and a layup from Adderton to shift into a 46-39 lead.

Edward Waters took a good chunk of the time off the clock and produced an 11-5 run in the process to pull within one point of Columbus State with nine minutes to play. The Cougars managed to extend the lead to 12 points with less than two minutes remaining which seemed as if the game was over.

However, EWU battled in the final moments going on a 10-1 to close out the game, falling short of a comeback opportunity. Thankfully, CSU held on tight to the lead and won 74-71.
