COLUMBUS – Top-seeded and second-ranked Columbus State women's soccer took to the pitch at the Walden Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon for the second round of the NCAA Division II National Tournament.
The Lady Cougars (21-0-1) met with 17th-ranked and fourth-seeded Catawba (N.C.) on Sunday in what was a rematch from Oct. 9. Earlier in the year, the Indians (11-3-5) visited Columbus and left with a 3-2 loss to their record.
CSU left zero doubt in Sunday's meeting, defeating Catawba in dominating fashion with a 6-0 thumping which set a program record for most goals in a NCAA Tournament match. The match was essentially decided in the first half with a 5-0 blitz in the first 45 minutes with CSU adding one more goal late in the second half to seal the fate of Catawba.
First Half
Both teams took some time to feel the match out and get a measure on how the day would play out. Catawba ripped the first shot of the match in the fourth minute, forcing
Heidi Harris to make a save. Columbus State responded roughly four minutes later with a shot from
Faith Knoedler missing the mark.
The Lady Cougars would take a 1-0 advantage in the 10th minute as a pass from Knoedler would connect to the feet of
Abigail Akerson who slotted the ball in the net. CSU then put the pedal to the metal and produced a pair of shots on frame which were denied by Ashley Hughes within a few moments of each other.
Vanessa Aviles placed the second goal in the net in the 13th minute cleaning up a scrum for the ball in the box off a corner kick to give CSU a 2-0 edge. Over the next few minutes shots from
Michelle Medina and
Sarah Hungerford were thwarted, but Hungerford would not be denied in the 25th minute.
The junior from Richmond Hill, Ga. gathered her 12th goal of the season with the assistance from
Lauren Barnes, lifting the Lady Cougars to a 3-0 lead. Catawba was already in desperation mode after the second score, however, the third from Hungerford completely deflated the visitors.
Late in the half, CSU would tally two more goals. The first would come from the foot of
Ui Suzuki who cleaned up a poor defensive clearance for the fourth goal in the 38th minute.
Elle Henschel followed in the 40th minute with a precise header in the box as
Mia Robinson whipped in a beauty of a cross to give Columbus State a 5-0 edge in the half.
CSU led 16-4 in overall shots and 10-1 in shots on goal. The Lady Cougars also led 6-2 in corners.
Second Half
The Lady Cougars nearly made the game 6-0 in the first 16 seconds as Hungerford's attempt toward goal was denied. The second half slowed down tremendously for both sides as substitutions and many lineup changes were made.
Columbus State produced just three shots over the course of the next 30 minutes, all of which missed the mark. CSU would go on to find one more score in the match as
Kendal Coreil notched her first goal of the season with a dish off from Medina in the 75th minute. The Lady Cougars finished with three more attempts with one on goal, securing a 6-0 victory and advancing to the third round of the NCAA National Tournament.
